What is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional results on Google, synthesising information from multiple web sources with links to those sources. They were previously tested under the name Search Generative Experience (SGE).

Also known as: Google AI Overviews, SGE, Search Generative Experience

An AI Overview occupies the position that historically drove the largest share of organic clicks. It answers the query directly and links to the pages it drew from, which means a site can be a source for an answer it does not rank first for — and can rank first for a query whose answer is satisfied before anyone scrolls.

Source selection does not track ranking position cleanly. Pages outside the top ten are regularly cited, and top-ranked pages are regularly omitted. Extractability, topical specificity and corroboration across sources appear to matter more than position alone.

Overviews do not appear for every query, and their presence changes over time for the same query. Any measurement of them has to be a time series rather than a single reading.

Why AI Overviews matters

When an overview appears, it takes the most valuable position on the page. Being cited inside it partly recovers visibility that the overview itself removed.

Position does not guarantee inclusion

Ranking first does not ensure citation, and pages well outside the first page are cited regularly.

Triggering varies

Overviews appear inconsistently across queries and change over time, so presence must be tracked rather than assumed.

Grounding requires crawler access

Blocking Google-Extended removes a site from Gemini and AI Overview grounding while leaving normal Search indexing intact.

Extractable structure helps

Direct answers under question-shaped headings are more readily synthesised than the same information spread across a page.

Common questions

No. Google-Extended controls whether your content can be used for Gemini and AI Overview grounding. Normal Search indexing is governed separately by Googlebot. Blocking Google-Extended keeps you in Search results while removing you from AI Overview citations — which is usually the opposite of what a site wants.

Direct AEO AnswerNo. Blocking Google-Extended removes content from Gemini and AI Overviews grounding but does not affect normal Google Search indexing, which is controlled by Googlebot.
