What is Zero-Click Search?
A zero-click search is a search that ends without the user visiting any external website, because the result page itself satisfied the query through a featured snippet, knowledge panel, or AI-generated summary.
Also known as: no-click search
Zero-click behaviour long predates AI search — weather, unit conversions and opening hours have resolved on the results page for years. What changed is scope. Summaries now resolve comparative and explanatory queries that previously required reading several pages.
The strategic consequence is that impressions and clicks diverge. A page can gain visibility while losing traffic, and reporting that counts only sessions will read that as decline. Brand-level measurement — whether you were named, whether you were cited — captures value that click counting misses.
Not all traffic is equally exposed. Queries with a transactional or navigational intent still convert to clicks at high rates; purely informational queries absorb most of the loss.
Why Zero-Click Search matters
Traffic-only reporting misreads this shift as failure. Being cited in an answer a user never clicks still shapes which vendor they consider.
Impressions rise while clicks fall
Search Console showing steady impressions against falling clicks is the signature pattern of a query set absorbed by summaries.
Informational queries absorb most loss
Definitional and explanatory content is most exposed; transactional pages are relatively insulated.
Citation becomes the unit of visibility
Where a click is unlikely, being named as the source is the outcome worth measuring.
