What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that a search or AI system selects it as the direct answer to a question, rather than as one link among many. It focuses on concise, self-contained answers, explicit question-and-answer formatting, and structured data.
Also known as: AEO
Traditional search optimization competes for position in a list. Answer engine optimization competes for a different slot: the single response a system reads back when a user asks a question. That slot appears in featured snippets, voice assistant replies, and the summary at the top of an AI-generated answer.
The practical difference is format. A page can rank first and still lose the answer slot because its content is spread across three paragraphs and a table, while a competitor states the answer in one sentence directly under a matching heading. Extraction rewards content that can be lifted cleanly out of its page.
AEO does not replace traditional optimization; a page that cannot be found still cannot be extracted. It is an additional constraint on how the content is written once the page is otherwise competitive.
Why Answer Engine Optimization matters
A growing share of searches are resolved without a click. If a system answers the question using your content but the format prevented attribution, the visit is lost and the credit goes elsewhere.
Answer directly under the heading
Place a 40–60 word self-contained answer immediately after the heading that poses the question, before any preamble or context.
Match the question phrasing
Use the interrogative form people actually type or say, as a heading. Extraction pairs headings with queries.
Add FAQPage structured data
Explicit question–answer pairing in JSON-LD removes ambiguity about which span answers which question.
Avoid context-dependent openings
An answer beginning "This means that…" or "As mentioned above…" cannot survive extraction, because the referent does not travel with it.
Common questions
They overlap heavily and many practitioners use the terms interchangeably. The useful distinction is the target: AEO aims at being selected as the answer, including in traditional features like snippets and voice results. GEO aims specifically at being cited as a source inside a generated answer from a large language model.
Direct AEO AnswerAEO and GEO overlap substantially. AEO targets selection as a direct answer including featured snippets and voice results; GEO targets citation as a source inside AI-generated answers.
No. The structural changes AEO asks for — clear headings, direct answers, clean structured data — are things traditional ranking systems already reward. The risk runs the other way: content optimized only for keyword density often reads too diffusely to be extracted.
Direct AEO AnswerNo. AEO practices such as clear headings, direct answers and structured data also support traditional search rankings.
